Julian Recaps: Back in MCU Multiverse Shenanigans Again in Loki Season Two Premiere

Loki Season Two has premiered on Disney +! It’s a bit weird with Jonathan Major’s presence as Kang appearing all over the place in this season. It shouldn’t be too bad, but I’m just hoping this show can rekindle some show of faith for the MCU at this point. I was intrigued with the concept of a multiverse the MCU decided to springboard off of The Infinity Saga (to be frank, Sony’s Spider-Verse movies did it first before Marvel/Disney, and they are animated and better superhero multiverse movies including Everything Everywhere All At Once. So…you’re kind of late on that front, Mr. Feige). Now the multiverse/breaking the fourth wall, etc. concept has begun to annoy me. And it’s not just in cinema, I was watching the latest season of Big Brother on Paramount + where the Big Brother House itself started borrowing the concept. I’ll talk about my gripe about the multiverse in a different article because I’m getting ahead of myself. Right. Back to talking about TVA shenanigans. 

Episode one Ouroboros picks up immediately where season one left off in the past TVA where Kang’s (Jonathan Majors) statute rules all. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is being pursued by past Mobieus (Owen Wilson), B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku), and multiple Minutemen because he’s a variant to them. But Loki, realizes they’ve never met yet. During the chase, he’s glitching all over the place (an obvious nod to the Spider-Verse movies).

Meanwhile, the real Mobieus and B-15 look at the screen of the timelines colliding. They were both summoned to a hearing with Judge Gamble (Liz Carr) in the War Room regarding the issue of the branching timelines. Loki, in the past TVA, hears a recording of Revonna Renslayer (Gugu-Mbatha Raw) and He Who Remains and discovers the murals in the past War Room resembling the variant of Kang Loki met in the last season. He glitches back into the present to expose the interior decoration of the man he and Sylvie Laufeydottir (Sophia Di Martino) met at the Citadel at the End of Time. Upon seeing this, Judge Game declares the TVA to stop pruning timelines. However, General Dox (Katie Dickie) and Hunter X-05(Neil Ellice) start a manhunt for Sylvie.

Loki and Mobius go to meet a TVA mechanic named Ouroboros aka O.B. (Key Huy Quan) to solve his “time-slipping” issue. Loki keeps slipping from the present to the past in conversation with O.B. in fixing his condition. The only way he has to stop time-slipping is to prune himself. Then, he has to use the Temporal Aura Extractor to pull Loki out of the Temporal Loom making time physical again. Loki, through his constant time-slipping, manages to prune himself after seeing Sylvie in an elevator. Loki saved himself from total disintegration and Mobius saved from turning into spaghetti and severe aging.   

After the credits, Sylvie walks from a time door into 1982 Brixton, Oklahoma. She walks into a McDonald’s restaurant asking for food that doesn’t involve eating rats or possums etc. As Jack the cashier lists off the menu, she says she’ll “try everything”. 

Okay, the first episode of season two was admittedly shaky but fine. It springboards off the horrifying revelation about the Kang Dynasty coming for the multiverse now that the timelines are free. This season feels more urgent since the Multiverse Saga’s big bad Kang is about to rear his head. 

Loki Season Two is a shaky yet good start to the series. Urgency and an eventual multiverse collapse is the theme for this series and for the franchise as a whole. Hopefully, this fan-favorite show will put the MCU back on track after a series of duds.
