Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton and directed by Dexter Fletcher, looks like it’s about to be cool, if these first look images are anything to by. Egerton seems completely lost (in a good way) in the role of Elton John, and something tells me it could be one of the biggest movie events of the year. Dare I say, it looks like it’s about to be much cooler than Bohemian Rhapsody could ever be.
Why? Because it just feels like it’s about to be more authentic to the life of Elton John than Queen’s version of events regarding Freddie Mercury, which is quite the statement to make. Even though Mercury’s band was behind the film, Bohemian Rhapsody still got hit with accusations of biphobia and/homophobia, since Mercury’s sexuality was tackled in an awkward fashion, according to critics.
Second, Egerton looks a lot more like John than Rami Malek looked like Mercury. While Malek looked like he could possibly be a young Mercury, Egerton looks almost exactly like John in his 20s and 30s.
And there’s the case of Fletcher, who worked on both Bohemian Rhapsody and this film. More about Fletcher’s Bohemian Rhapsody work in this post.
But this post isn’t trying to maliciously pit the two films together; it’s just that everyone’s going to start comparing the two since there are so many similarities, and the comparisons really can’t be helped, on a certain level. You can expect even more in-depth comparisons and dissections from film fans and critics the closer it gets to Rocketman‘s release date, May 31. Until then, take a look at these awesome first look images, which make me very excited to see the film. Being someone who has loved John ever since a child thanks to The Lion King, Rocketman is quickly shooting up my list of must-see films.
