There’s not a lot of space for African-American creators in children’s entertainment. For instance, it wasn’t until I did some research for this particular article that I realized that Disney Channel’s Doc McStuffins wasn’t created by a black person.

Chris Nee is the brain behind Disney Channel’s hit show about a young black girl who treats her toy patients. But even though the show is a fantastic portrayal of black girl excellence and inspires its young viewers, it’s surprising that a black creator hasn’t been tapped to create an educational show with the same importance as Doc McStuffins. In fact, Bill Cosby’s Little Bill might be the most recent educational children’s show in recent memory that was created by a black person.

Enter creator multimedia company ADC Kid and its founder, Davon Clark, a two-time NAACP Image Award winner who aims to disrupt the system with The Adventures of Prada Enchilada, his pitch for a major TV network or VOD platform.

The Adventures of Prada Enchilada has been in development for 2 1/2 years with focus groups at schools, summer camps, libraries and community centers. According to the press release, the show pitch is based on “an interactive children’s book series featuring a dog (Prada Enchilada) and cat (Mimi Tortellini) duo living on Endless Lane, where every learning adventure is endless. The characters embark on various missions helping children identify objects, learn fun facts, and utilize basic math.”

“This mission is ground breaking. It not only aims to be the first educational children’s animation created by an African American to be pitch to a major TV network or VOD platform, but it will include actors of color in the two lead roles.” Clark said in a statement. “We are also looking for animators to help with the project.”
