Back to more irrationalities with NBC’s The Irrational Season Two with recaps of both episodes nine and ten! It seems like Alec Mercer (Jessie L. Martin) and co. happen to have their hands full with a series of cases that exceeds the definition of “irrational”. So let’s dive into what happened in the past two episodes before next week’s case.

Episode nine Another Man’s Treasure finds Mercer helping his ex-wife Marissa (Maahra Hill) and her partner agent Quinn investigate a string of museum thefts involving Nigerian bowls. These bowls were taken around the same time when his research assistants, Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi) and Simon (Max-Lloyd Jones), got caught up in a mob who were impatient for the latest Oculus VR headset gear.

Throughout their investigation, Alec and co. learn that these were coordinated by the mastermind and their accomplices to keep authorities distracted in order to enact their plot. One of those accomplices happens to be the museum’s curator, Nnamdi Obasi (Michael Potts), whose grievances about stolen Nigerian artifacts by Western colonialism prompted him to reposition the display cases. But he was kept in the dark about people getting hurt in the process.

Marissa and Quinn interrogate another associate college student activist Kai Potter (Donia Kash), who takes orders from a guy named “Tom”. Their plan was to move the bowls into his possession before he left D.C. for good. The agents go to grab Potter’s friend and second accomplice until they see that “Tom” gave accomplice #2 a concussion and ran off with the 2nd stolen bowl.

Mercer, as usual, gambles the case by tempting “Tom” with a third bowl to trap him. He soon realizes that “Tom Fields” is a pen name for author Warren Sheffield, who has an obsession of priceless artifacts. Sheffield is foiled by the FBI and the bowls are then repatriated. Marissa meanwhile signs up for an adoption program waiting for the day her adopted son, Beanie will welcome her with open arms.

Episode Ten Now You Don’t is another fun episode with Mercer and his Ex-MI6/fixer girlfriend Rose Dinshaw (Karen David). Mercer and Dinshaw attend a magic show featuring female magician Helena Jensen (Carmel Amit). Things aren’t as magical when a participant Adelaide (Melaine Rose Wilson) suddenly was stabbed in the neck on stage. Jensen is then taken into custody by D.C. Metro Police, leaving Mercer and Dinshaw to find out the cause behind this murder.

During their investigation, Jensen is being framed by someone who most likely does not want to see her succeed in the magician business. With this line of logic, Mercer and Rose’s deduction leads to Jensen’s mentor, Charles Earl Raclette (Charles Shaughnessy) who meticulously staged the entire thing right down to Adelaide’s features of hair and nail polish to watch his pupil fail spectacularly. He tries to escape, but Jensen and her fellow male magicians manage to corner and seal him away in a box. A magical box for the police to slap the cuffs on him.

Meanwhile, Kylie (Travina Springer) is spending quality time with her new girlfriend Joyce (Bethany Brown). This leaves audiences to question “Whatever happened to the previous FBI girlfriend that she started to date in the previous season?”. It seems like people are not getting an answer for that anytime soon, but at least Kylie’s in good spirits. As for Alec, he’s getting along with Rose but reflects on his scar surgery which has been an overarching plot of this season so far.

Both episodes were great in their own right. Though episode ten was slightly outlandish since it was about magicians, but it was wildly entertaining. This has been said in previous articles, but things are going a bit too well in this season. Alec is happy with Rose, Kylie is happy with her new girlfriend, and Marissa is waiting for her adopted son to show up. It is great to see everything progressing which is what the audiences want for these characters. However, a needle might drop somewhere in these last few episodes. That would truly become something…irrational. Ha ha ha, get it?
