Okay…2025 is here! And so is the return of NBC’s The Irrational Season Two. Similar to how season one began in 2024 with only four episodes left, it feels like we are in the homestretch of this season. For a while, Alec Mercer (Jessie L. Martin) has constantly put himself in the path of danger throughout the entire series. These next few episodes will possibly explore how his good luck karma is finally catching up to him. So much, so that it has him in the hospital this episode. Let’s recap what exactly happened in episode eight before tomorrow’s episode.
Episode Eight Lost Souls finds Mercer making headway on a new case involving missing tennis star turned marathon runner Shanae Butler (Davida Williams). It wasn’t until trauma-induced appendicitis from the fall midseason finale episode weeks ago began to put him in the hospital for the entire episode. Leaving his ex-wife/FBI agent Marissa (Maahra Hill), new fixer girlfriend Rose Dinshaw (Karen David), and his sister Kyile (Travina Springer) to take over the case. However, this doesn’t mean Mercer is sitting the investigation out.
During their trek through the woods amid a dangerous wildfire, Marissa opens up to Rose about her being pregnant at seventeen years old. She ended up giving the baby to an adoption center and promised herself to not go search for the baby. In reflection of her young reckless years, she decided to make a change and become an FBI agent. And the only other person who’s aware of this is Alec, who dubs it her origin story.
Mercer, after various interviews including one with Shanae’s mother, Dionne (Marci T. House), and with the help of his research assistants, concludes that someone was following Shanae. The person who is following her is an insurance auditor who, after Shanae decided not to play tennis anymore, decided to render her policy void and began to clean house.
Marissa and Rose manage to apprehend the shooter and take him into custody with Shanae safe and sound. The two agree on something that they have on their mind: They both want to see Alec happy. As for Mercer, he’s recovering despite his later attempts to excuse himself from the hospital. As this episode ends with a happy ending, this is probably part one of a potential turning point for this series.
Episode Nine premieres tonight and finds Mercer and Co. investigating a museum heist and other revelations that may occur. Stay tuned for the next recap!
