Okay, another episode of The Irrational Season Two is premiering this week. In the promo, Alec (Jessie L. Martin) tries to stop a speeding train. Before that happens, we should briefly recap what happened in the previous episode. This episode in particular is a pretty sensitive issue as it is in the real world. So, let’s talk about it.
Episode Five, Anatomy of a Fall (a Similar title to the 2023 film), finds Phoebe (Molly Kunz) slightly having a panic attack after snitching on Professor Rachel Myers (Jennifer Lines) for plagiarism. After she and her have a mild confrontation about her prospects in academia, Phoebe packs up her stuff and leaves in the middle of a Friday bonfire party outside of Wylton University. At the party, a female student named Kenzie (Audrey Mallet) suddenly fell from the clock tower sending the party to a screeching halt.
Dean Emelia Wylton (Laura Soltis) alerts Mercer that she’s concerned about the school’s image now that there’s a suicide contagion in the aftermath of Kenzie’s death. Mercer decides to look into the matter with Wylton advising him to not assign her son to the case. An issue that Simon (Max-Lloyd Jones) pleads Mercer to be on the case regardless.
Mercer invites his ex-wife/FBI agent Marissa (Maahra Hill) to investigate the school’s Gamma Rho sorority given that she was also a part of the AKA sorority in her college years. They investigate Kenzie’s sorority members including their leader Tegan (Gabrielle Jacinto) and they both suspect that they are hiding something and that they may all be complicit in Kenzie’s suicide.
After interviewing numerous suspects and following clues, Mercer and Co. find out that a doctor who is also a member of the Gamma Rho sorority named Jenna (Megan Peta Hill) was responsible for Kenzie’s death. The cause of death was not from suicide but from an overdose which then cleared the remainder of the sorority members and gave a peace of mind to Kenzie’s father, Norris (Blake Robbins). Simon opens up about his brother’s suicide being covered up by his mother to Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi) and lo and behold…Phoebe returns as Mercer’s research assistant again!
Right. This episode was pretty good, and it does treat the issue of suicide respectably well. And it does effectively end Phoebe’s arc of the story. Unless it ends up coming back to haunt her near the finale. So, now with that out of the way, Mercer and Co. will have their hands full with a whole new case tomorrow at 9 CT on NBC.
