It looks like Batman fans are returning to the gritty world of Matt Reeves’ 2022 smash hit, The Batman, in its upcoming spinoff series The Penguin. This official trailer highlights fan-favorite villain and scene-stealer Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) looking to carve a slice of the now rudderless Falcone crime family for the start of his new criminal enterprise. Falcone’s daughter, Sofia (Cristini Militoti) is looking to even the score.

I am excited to watch this series because I am a Batman fan and enjoyed Reeves’ take on the Batman mythos. I thought it was one of the best superhero movies of 2022. It was more of a detective thriller since one of Batman’s nicknames is “The World’s Greatest Detective”. Well…in this iteration Bruce Wayne’s only two years in being Batman, so he’s still a rookie at this point.

Another reason is that I am a sucker for midquels. It’s a bridging series or ‘interquel’ if you want to call it, between The Batman and the upcoming 2026 sequel, The Batman: Part II. So it will be cool to see how Penguin and Gotham City change after The Riddler’s (Paul Dano) terrorist attack. And if possible, will Robert Pattinson’s Batman make a cameo at some point in the show or toward the end? All of these questions I pose will probably be answered when the series streams on Max on September 19th. Here is the synopsis and official trailer:
