The 79th Annual Golden Globes was a non-televised affair Sunday, with The Power of the Dog earning the award for Best Picture, Nicole Kidman winning for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama. (Being the Ricardos) and Will Smith winning for Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama (King Richard).
West Side Story won Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy, with star Rachel Zegler winning Best Actress in that category. Andrew Garfield won Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy for his leading role in Tick, Tick…Boom.
Other standout wins come from Encanto winning for Best Motion Picture-Animated, Japan entry Drive My Car winning Best Motion Picture-Non-English Language, Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) winning Best Supporting Actress and Actor. Jane Campion also continued the trend of female directors finally being recognized by awarding bodies with her win for Best Director (The Power of the Dog).
Michaela Jaé (MJ) Rodriguez made history as a trans actress of color winning in the Best Actress in a Television Series-Drama category for Pose, and The Underground Railroad won for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. O Yeong-Su, the elderly actor who played the mysterious Player 001 in Squid Game, won for Best Supporting Actor in a Supporting Role on Television, a first for O in America.
Overall, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story racked up the most awards with three a-piece, and in television, Succession came out on top with three awards. Hacks came up second with two.
It’s worth noting that Reservation Dogs, FX’s groundbreaking series about Native American youth, was nominated for a Golden Globe. Unfortunately, it didn’t win any prizes, but hopefully, its time in the awards spotlight will pave the way for future shows with Native American casts and storylines.
This year, the Golden Globes also sought to regain its goodwill with the entertainment industry and the public by highlighting the HFPA’s philanthropy to organizations dedicated to diversity, training, and inclusion. The full breakdown of the HFPA’s philanthropic efforts will be covered in the following post.
