Recently, Michael B. Jordan broke the hearts of people worldwide when he and Lori Harvey made their relationship Instagram official.

While some of Jordan’s fans licked their wounds at the announcement, others thought the pictures looked suspiciously like movie promotion. Jordan and Harvey’s photos were so well made that some people theorized that the relationship is all publicity for an upcoming romantic movie.

I don’t know if the conspiracy theories are true. But I can tell you that one type of film we haven’t seen much on Jordan’s acting resume is, in fact, romance films. When I started thinking about Jordan’s career after reading these conspiracy tweets, I realized the only romantic film starring Jordan that I know of is 2014’s That Awkward Moment, a romantic comedy starring Jordan, Zac Efron, and Miles Teller. The film involves three best friends who try to figure out how to navigate the forever-awkward “What are we?” question in burgeoning relationships.

But it’s now 2020–six years since That Awkward Moment. While Jordan’s film career is full of stellar films with important messages, such as Black PantherJust Mercy, and others, we haven’t seen Jordan let loose in a movie for a while now. It would be nice to see Jordan’s softer side in a film since seeing Black leads in romance films can be just as revolutionary as seeing Black leads in essential dramas.

Looking at Jordan’s upcoming films, it seems like they are all dramas. The project that’s the closest to a full-blown romance film is Creed III, continuing the story of Adonis Creed, his boxing career, and his relationship with girlfriend Bianca, played by Tessa Thompson. While there doesn’t seem to be a romantic comedy or romantic drama on the horizon for Jordan, I hope that Jordan decides to jump back in the romance pool sometime soon.

What kind of romance films would you like to see Jordan star in?
