Bravo is giving reality show fans a dose of the theatrical with their newest show, Your Husband is Cheating On Us. The show, starring legendary theatrical director JD Lawrence, features him working with the cast of his newest play, also called Your Husband is Cheating On Us. What makes workshopping this production different, however, is that the entire cast–which includes R&B singer Ginuwine, D’Atra Hicks, Tondy Gallant, Lia Grant, Kristen Plati, and Jermaine Sellers–must live in the same house. Cue the fireworks.

The sneak peek from the show give tantalizing looks at how much drama fans can expect each week.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Hicks earlier this week, and she told me more about her character in the play and what fans can expect from both the play and the drama that will go down in the reality show.

Hicks has been acting since she was 16 years old, receiving her big break as Doris Winter in the play, Mama, I Want to Sing!. She has since worked the Grammy and Tony-winning Smokey Joe’s Cafe, as well as A Good Man is Hard to Find, Madea’s Family Reunion, and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. She also owns her own talent development and management company Diamonds Productions and co-owns Tojo/D Entertainment.

Hicks said her character in the play Your Husband is Cheating On Us is a woman who is accepting the wrong type of love.

“My character is a young woman who is…looking for love and just accepting love in the wrong place. She’s accepting this love, but she knows this is the wrong kind of love. She knows she’s being cheating on,” she said.  “She knows [the man in her life] this is supposed to be her man, but…he’s not going to be her man. She’s hoping it will turn out right, but it’s not going to turn out right.”

The play is one Hicks feels fans are going to immediately love. “[The play] is a very vibrant and very fun, funny show,” she said. “It’s full of talent, it’s full of fun, and it’s a big story. It’s a very exciting, very fun and very musical show.”

Hicks said working with Lawrence is “a lot of fun” and “unorthodox,” something that’s already evident from the sneak peek above.

“His work is different,” she said. “…[H]e’s very hard-working. He wants you to study, work on your craft and work hard in your studying. He makes you work on your character very hard,” she said.

What fans are going to be surprised by the most, said Hicks, is just how real the show’s drama will be, and how it will parallel the drama happening within the actual play.

“They’re going to be very surprised by the realness…of the show and with what’s happening in the house and the play,” she said. “The combination with [the drama of the house and the play], it’s like what’s really happening with the play, too.”

Make sure to tune into the premiere of Your Husband is Cheating On Us April 1 at 9/8c. on Bravo.
